On October 27th, we met in the morning and headed to Lednice Castle.
Japan also has many castles, but their structure and atmosphere are completely different. And since Mike’s home country, New Zealand, doesn’t have a “castle culture” at all, both of us were absolutely fascinated by European castles.

Lednice Castle is part of the UNESCO World Heritage site “The Lednice–Valtice Cultural Landscape” in southern Czechia. Once used as a summer residence by the Liechtenstein family, it features elegant English-style Neo Gothic architecture and vast, beautifully maintained gardens.

I couldn’t help whispering,
“Wow… what a beautiful castle.”

Unlike Prague Castle, this one looks exactly like the kind of castle you imagine from fairy tales. Czechia truly feels like a real life Disneyland to me.

Not only T and his partner joined us that day, but our friend K—who lives in Hranice, where we would visit the next day—also came with his girlfriend.
After meeting up with everyone, we joined a guided tour of the castle. The tour was in Czech, but V kindly translated everything into English for us, which helped so much.
There were countless highlights, but the room that captured my heart the most was the stunning Turquoise Room, surrounded by soft, beautiful blue walls.

The vivid wall coverings are made from nuéde leather (deerskin), and amazingly, the original leather wallpaper from 170 years ago remains intact. Its colors and texture have survived through time, still touching the hearts of modern visitors. I stood there for a while, simply admiring its beauty.

Another impressive feature was the spiral staircase leading to the duke’s private living quarters. It was carved from a single log—without using nails or screws—and decorated with intricate animal carvings. It felt like walking through a piece of art.

There are three different tours available in the castle, and this time we joined the main tour that introduces the first floor. There is far more to see than I can fit into this short blog, so if you ever visit Brno, I truly recommend stopping by.

By the time the tour ended, we were getting hungry, so we headed to a restaurant recommended by T. Just like the night before, it was completely full, so we moved to another place.
In a cozy interior filled with warm wooden décor, the Czech group ordered traditional beef stew and knedlík, Czech-style dumplings made from boiled bread. I tried a bite of the knedlík—it had a pleasantly chewy, mochi-like texture.
Mike and I shared soup, chicken schnitzel, and the cheese fritters recommended by everyone.

Everything was delicious again today—thank you for the wonderful meal.

After lunch, we took a walk through the vast gardens toward the tower visible in the distance.

Strolling slowly through the beautiful autumn colors while chatting with everyone felt incredibly peaceful. Even though my lingering cough from a cold must have been bothersome, everyone treated me with such kindness, and I was truly grateful.

The tower on the opposite side is called the Minaret, an exotic-style lookout tower built in the early 19th century. Although Arabic inscriptions decorate the structure, it has no religious meaning—just a reflection of the era’s fascination with foreign cultures.

As evening approached, we returned to Brno for the night’s training session. That evening, both Mike and I were scheduled to teach.
I taught during the first hour. From participating in the previous day’s practice, I noticed that complete beginners struggled with ukemi, which made it difficult for them to practice techniques smoothly. So I decided to teach back ukemi and mae ukemi slowly from the basics. However, this would be too simple for black belts and experienced white belts, so while I focused on teaching mae ukemi, T kindly watched over the advanced group.

✈️ Traveloka: Fly to Prague

Mike, who is recovering from an arm injury, taught about the importance of maintaining a strong center.

After practice, V came to me and said, “Your way of teaching forward ukemi was really good. I’ll teach it that way too.” Hearing that made me genuinely happy.
T and V teach classes with such a wide range of levels every single day—I truly admire their dedication.

After changing clothes and returning to the dojo, we found everyone chatting in the lounge area. When we joined them, their slightly shy and gentle atmosphere reminded me so much of Japanese people. T’s office was decorated with many photos taken
in Japan, showing his deep love for Aikido and his friends. It touched my heart.
Thank you so much for the wonderful training time.

※This is T—Tomáš’s dojo, Aikido Ikigai Dojo.
https://www.facebook.com/aikidoikigaibrno/

After practice, we were invited to T and V’s home for our final night in Brno. They treated us to plenty of Czech ham, salami, cheese, and wine.

Even though we had spent so much time together before the seminar, visiting their country made me realize how much more there was to learn about them.
We talked endlessly until past midnight, but since they had work the next day and we needed to take our first long-distance bus to Hranice, we reluctantly said our goodbyes.

From sightseeing in Prague to the seminar itself, Tomáš and Vanda always looked after us. Despite being young, they have such warm and generous hearts, and we felt their kindness deeply.
Thank you, truly.

The next morning, we headed to Brno, where T’s dojo is located.
We planned to stay there for two nights, enjoy some sightseeing, and train at his dojo. Since they had come by car, we were grateful to be able to ride along with them.

T is a big guy, and his car matches his size—large, sturdy, and perfect for long drives. He teaches Aikido at his own dojo from Monday to Friday, and on weekends he travels across Europe to participate in seminars. “Dedicated young martial artist” describes him perfectly.

During the drive, we stopped at a highway rest area for a short break.
I picked up a small donut and a drink called Kofola. According to T, it’s the Czech version of cola. It’s made with extracts from 14 kinds of herbs and fruits, plus licorice. Instead of an artificial sweetness, it has a gentle herbal flavor, a light sweetness, and refreshing carbonation—exactly the kind of taste I love.

Around midday, we arrived in Brno, a city known for its large student population.
Fortunately, the place we booked was right across from their dojo, and a coin laundry was within walking distance.
We immediately put our long-unwashed clothes into the washing machine and headed to a restaurant for lunch while they were being washed.
This restaurant is one of their regular spots and serves both Italian and Czech dishes. They ordered the “daily menu,” while I, still dealing with a lingering cold, chose soup and pasta.

⇒Search hotels in Prague on Trip.com

After lunch, we moved the laundry to the dryer and spent some time killing time until check-in.
The key to the accommodation was to be picked up at a café located behind the dojo. The café is known for its delicious waffles, but since I was still full from lunch, I shared one with T’s girlfriend, V. It was fluffy and wonderfully tasty.

By the time it passed 3:30 p.m., we headed to the room. The building was similar to public housing in Japan, and the entrance was a bit hard to find, but thanks to their help, we arrived safely. They adjusted the central heating to a comfortable temperature, and we had free time until practice.
After picking up the dried laundry, we went to a supermarket to buy fruit, tea, and some light breakfast items. Once we rested a little in the room, it was already time for practice.

This is T—Tomáš’s dojo, Aikido Ikigai Dojo.
https://www.facebook.com/aikidoikigaibrno/

They renovated the dojo themselves, creating a clean, bright space with white as the main color. From the kamidana to the slippers and the noren, you can feel touches of Japan throughout the dojo.
Since the next day was a holiday, T mentioned that there might be fewer students. But in reality, around 30 regular students showed up. Among them was a man we had met at a seminar in Luxembourg—an old friend of T’s, as it turns out.

T had actually asked us to teach special classes, one day each for Mike and me. But since we didn’t yet know the students or the dojo’s training style, we decided to join T’s class for the day.
It was a beginner class, but the students ranged from those who had just started in September to black belts.
Even though it’s an overseas dojo, T visits Hombu Dojo every year and has experience as a live-in trainee, so within his modern teaching style, you can still see movements reminiscent of Hombu. Time passed quickly.

✈️ Traveloka: Fly to Prague

After practice, we returned to the room for a shower, then headed back to the dojo to meet everyone before going out for dinner in the city center. One Japanese student and B, whom we met in Luxembourg, joined us.
We took the tram—which runs 24 hours—to the center. In the square with a church and a clock tower, there is a large statue of a horse.

T told us to look at it from underneath, so I obediently did…

Once you see the photo, there’s really nothing more to explain.

T’s recommended restaurant was unfortunately full, so we went to a traditional Czech bar-restaurant instead.
T chose the beer for us, and we shared finger chicken, French fries, and T’s recommendation: the famous “stinky cheese.”

A toast to this wonderful day.
According to T, “Czech beer is the best in the world!” And honestly, I could understand why. It has depth without being too bitter, is easy to drink yet still has a satisfying richness.
The stinky cheese spreads its aroma the moment it enters your mouth, but it pairs amazingly well with beer.

With delicious food and great company, conversation flowed endlessly, and before we knew it, it was almost midnight. Since the next day was a holiday, they planned to take us to a castle.
The bus schedule didn’t work out, so we walked about 20 minutes back to the room, pleasantly tipsy.
After deciding on the meeting time for tomorrow, we each returned to our rooms.

T and V—thank you so much for everything: the drive from Prague, the training, the meals, and even helping with our laundry.

https://www.facebook.com/aikidoikigaibrno/

The seminar venue and the restaurant for the social gathering were close enough to walk.
Following Google Maps, we were surprised when the route suddenly led into the forest. Unsure whether this could really be correct, we walked back and forth for a while—until other participants appeared behind us and kindly assured us, “Yes, that’s the right way.”
Once we passed through the dim forest, a quiet lake appeared, and beside it stood a restaurant. We had arrived safely.

Many people were already gathered, so we first secured seats for the two of us.
The meal fee had been paid in advance, but drinks were separate. The invitation had said “cash only,” though when we asked the organizer beforehand, he told us, “Cards should be fine.” In reality, however, only cash was accepted.
I was relieved that I had brought some. My friend, who usually relies on cards, couldn’t pay—so I treated him to a beer to celebrate our reunion.

Dinner was served buffet-style in a separate room. Amid the crowd, I filled my plate with the dishes available, only to discover that there were no forks or spoons—only knives.
When I returned to my seat, the Italian group next to us was also eating with just a knife.
“I’ve discovered a new way of eating—using only a knife!”
Her cheerful comment made me smile and helped me reflect on how I had almost let myself get annoyed by the cramped seating and lack of utensils.

After a while, Fujimaki Shihan and Mike arrived.
When I went to buy a beer for Mike, I couldn’t speak Czech, so I placed coins on my palm and gestured to the man in front of me to help with the order and payment. Instead, he took out his own wallet.
“It’s okay, please pay with this money,” I told him.
He then took one koruna from his wallet, added it to my coins, and paid the exact amount for me.
How kind he was.
When I said, “You are my angel,” the people in his group across from us also smiled warmly.

At the social gathering, everyone was in casual clothes, unlike in the dojo. It was a lovely opportunity to talk not only about Aikido but also about our lives and to introduce ourselves.
During this time, the shihan began signing the dan rank booklets for the black belt participants. My friend helped by opening the booklets and assisting beside him, but even so, signing nearly a hundred names was a huge task.
Instead of using a stamp, Shihan wrote each name carefully by hand. After finishing, he ate only a little and then walked around the room to greet everyone. His warm consideration deeply moved me.

Even after 9:30 p.m., the venue was still lively, but when the shihan decided to leave, we also headed back to our accommodation.

The next morning, I asked Mike about his elbow. He said he could train slowly, but wearing his hakama would be difficult, so he chose to observe the morning session.
The Lithuanian group took the same bus as the day before, while my friend and we walked to the venue.
We had been talking since yesterday, and our conversation never stopped. Walking under the beautiful autumn leaves, enjoying our reunion, I even forgot that I had a cold—and that I was carrying a backpack. Before we knew it, we had arrived at the dojo.

The organizer, T, told us that after driving the Shihan back, he returned to the venue and stayed until the party ended at 11 p.m.
“Aren’t you tired?”
“I’m fine—I got to sleep an extra hour.”
In fact, daylight saving time had ended the night before, and at 3 a.m., the clock went back to 2 a.m.

✈️ Traveloka: Fly to Prague

During the morning training, Fujimaki sensei called for a water break. The clock showed 11:55 a.m.
“A break? But there are only five minutes left.”
I wondered why, until I realized the clock hadn’t been adjusted and was still one hour behind. No wonder time felt so fast.
Training had been intense until then, but afterward it shifted to Osae techniques, allowing us to finish the unexpectedly extended hour without trouble.

The Italian group had a 12-hour drive ahead, so we said goodbye.
Yesterday we celebrated our reunion, and today we felt the sadness of parting.
It seems we will meet again next year, so for now, I simply wished them a safe journey home.

For lunch, we returned to the restaurant with the white herb soup that we had visited a few days earlier. We enjoyed the soup again and shared chicken cutlets and grilled vegetables.

“I’m sorry you got injured during my seminar.”
Perhaps Fujimaki Shihan had been waiting for a quiet moment to say this. He spoke gently to Mike. It wasn’t his fault at all, yet he felt responsible. His kindness surely eased Mike’s pain a little.

Mike planned to join the afternoon training. Although we worried about the wearing hakama, he managed to put it on.
My friend and I took turns practicing with him, and thanks to the sensei’s consideration, he was able to train without issues.

The final practice was in a group of five, and by coincidence, everyone in the group was someone who regularly visits Hombu Dojo. It felt almost like being back at Hombu, even though we were in the Czech Republic.
“It feels like Hombu,” the sensei said as he approached us. He gently reminded Mike—who had forgotten his elbow pain in the excitement of training—“Take care.”

The two days of training passed in the blink of an eye.
I was surrounded by wonderful participants, and many people showed kindness toward Mike—buying medicine for him, practicing gently, and watching out for him.
T, the organizer, supported the sensei tirelessly without showing fatigue. Seeing all of this filled me with gratitude for being able to participate.

In the evening, our Lithuanian friend took us to a Sochi restaurant near the hotel.
The food was delicious, but unfortunately, we ended the night with “overcharging incident.”

「you are my angel」

On the morning of October 25th, the day of the seminar, I woke up at 6:30 and checked how my slight cold was doing.
My throat was still sore, but thankfully I didn’t feel any fatigue. It seemed I would be able to participate without any problems.

We planned to take a bus to the venue, but just in case anything delayed us, we decided to take an earlier bus.
The Lithuanian group had just under ten people—some familiar faces, some new—and we exchanged brief introductions before boarding.

The bus arrived at the stop right in front of our hotel exactly on time, and we reached the stop near the venue right on schedule as well.
The hall was still fairly empty when we arrived early, but we completed the registration smoothly.

“I think Sensei will be arriving soon.”

With that thought, I stepped outside and saw the car of the friend who was driving Sensei pull into the parking lot.
The instructor for this seminar was Fujimaki Shihan from Aikikai Hombu Dojo. I’m always grateful for his guidance, but meeting him abroad gives the encounter a slightly different, almost refreshing feeling.

I hurried to gather the Lithuanian group, and we welcomed Sensei at the entrance while introducing everyone.

By the time we finished changing into our dogi, more and more people had gathered. Even though most of them were strangers, spotting a friend among the crowd instantly lifted my spirits.

It was cold outside, but inside the hall the heating made it pleasantly cool—perfect for training.
Before 9:00, everyone sat in seiza, and after a brief explanation from the organizers, Shihan entered and the seminar began.

Participating in a seminar in a country I had never visited before was nerve racking. I didn’t know what kind of training the participants usually did, and I would be paired almost entirely with people I had never met.
After warm ups, basic movements, and several techniques, Shihan introduced the participants.
About 80% were from the Czech Republic, and others had come from Slovakia, Italy, Lithuania, the Netherlands, the Philippines, and Japan—seven countries in total.
Looking around, I noticed there were more white belts than I expected, and children were training alongside adults.

Even within the same art of Aikido, people from different countries and dojos move differently—their strength, their ukemi, everything varies. But practicing together while respecting those differences made the training both exciting and enjoyable, even with the nervousness.
Because of my condition, I tired a bit more easily, but the morning session—focused mainly on basics—passed in no time.

For lunch, we quickly changed and were taken to a burger shop. I had grilled salmon, and Mike ordered a hamburger. Both of us left feeling satisfied.

The afternoon was divided into three 40 minute sessions: white belts only, all participants, and black belts only. This thoughtful structure reflected Shihan’s consideration for the many beginners present.
We were scheduled to join the second session, but I was curious about the basic class Shihan was teaching, so we watched from the adjacent basketball court.

✈️ Traveloka: Fly to Prague

Watching Shihan carefully explain ukemi and footwork, I was moved by how sincerely he wanted to convey Aikido. His teaching was so gentle and precise that it warmed my heart.

During the combined white belt and black belt session, a young girl—probably in early elementary school—came to train with me several times. I was happy she approached me, but practicing with someone so small and flexible required even more care than working with adults. It taught me how challenging it can be to find connection and apply techniques gently.
The black belt session afterward was much more advanced, and I enjoyed working hard and breaking a good sweat.

After the seminar, we gathered everyone to take photos with Shihan and friends—but Mike was nowhere to be found. As I looked around the venue, one of the participants approached me.
“I was training with him, and he got injured.”
What a shock.
The seminar continued the next day, and we were also supposed to join practice at the dojo afterward.
“He’s really upset…”
He pointed to a corner, and there I saw Mike cooling his arm.
Apparently, after finishing a technique and taking ukemi, his elbow had been twisted upward. No wonder he was angry. Even slight movement caused him pain, and when we gathered for photos, everyone expressed concern.

There was a social gathering afterward, but Mike couldn’t lift his arm enough to carry his bag. Shihan kindly offered to take him by car, so we accepted. I headed to the restaurant directly with my Lithuanian friends.

On October 24th, I woke up a little before 7 a.m., still feeling the lingering heaviness of my cold. I started the morning by boosting my vitamin C with a mandarin orange.

At 9 a.m., I met up with the same members from yesterday, and we headed to the Old Town by metro.
Prague’s metro system is wonderfully simple, with just three lines—A, B, and C—each clearly color coded. Even the underground passageways have colored stripes for each line, so as long as you follow them, it’s almost impossible to get lost.

Once we reached the surface, we were greeted by rows of colorful buildings that instantly made the whole area feel like a fairytale.

This is the heart of the Old Town. The astronomical clock moves at noon, so the square was still fairly quiet.

Following my friend’s lead, I looked down at the ground and noticed 27 small crosses.
They mark the spot where 27 Protestant leaders were publicly executed in 1621—a memorial to honor and remember them. Every country carries painful chapters in its history.

The Old Town is full of all kinds of shops—one moment you see a torture museum, and the next, a Thai massage studio. The mix of old and new gives the streets a unique charm, and simply walking around never gets boring.
After wandering for a while, it was time for a café break.
Today, my friends took me to a quirky café themed around “squares.”
The deep green interior had a retro feel, almost like stepping into 1970s America. Their specialty was square shaped donuts, and when I tried one, it had a light, airy texture similar to a French cruller.

“Since you’re in Prague, you really have to visit Charles Bridge,” my friend said.
Charles Bridge is a UNESCO World Heritage site, built in 1357 under Emperor Charles IV and completed in 1402. The Gothic stone bridge is lined with around 30 statues of saints, giving it a solemn, historical atmosphere.

The view from the bridge was beautiful, and paintings and souvenirs were being sold everywhere.
Compared to yesterday, the number of tourists had increased dramatically. No matter how lovely a place is, crowds always make it feel a little less magical—something that seems true everywhere in the world.

We spent the morning exploring the Old Town and arrived at the concert venue around 12:30. The souvenir shop inside was filled with pug figurines and artwork, though we never figured out why.
The concert hall was much smaller than I expected—just a cozy room with a single piano.

I had always imagined classical concerts taking place in large halls, but in the Czech Republic, where classical music is part of everyday life, performances are held in all sorts of venues. We had seen many posters around the city.
Since seating was unassigned, arriving early paid off and we managed to get seats with a good view.

At 1 p.m., three musicians—playing flute, piano, and violin—entered the room in simple formal attire.
I don’t listen to classical music often, so I was prepared to hear mostly unfamiliar pieces. But the moment the flutist began, I felt chills. The lively rhythm revealed a melody I actually knew.

✈️ Fly to Prague with Traveloka

Sometimes all three instruments played together, sometimes two, and sometimes just one.
In that small room, without any unnecessary decoration, they performed with such skill and care that even a beginner like me could feel the depth of their artistry. It was truly moving.
This is the Czech Republic—the country of music.
After the concert, I thanked my friend sincerely for bringing me there.

Still filled with emotion but also very hungry, we headed to a restaurant called “Turquoise.”
There was a dish on the menu that caught my eye, so I asked Mike what it was. “Fish,” he said. But when it arrived, it turned out to be a vegan salad. Apparently, he had mistaken the bread for fish. In the end, we traded—his kebab for some of my bread.

We considered stopping by a café afterward, but decided instead to check out the gym where tomorrow’s seminar would be held.
The gym was large, with two basketball courts and training mats laid out at the back.

It was spacious enough to accommodate more than 120 participants, who were expected to gather the next day. I couldn’t wait.

The walk back to the hotel took about 20 minutes.
After relaxing in my room for a bit, we met again in the evening for dinner.
I was in the mood for chicken to prepare for tomorrow’s training, but the restaurant’s specialty was beef. Since I don’t eat beef, I ordered soup, grilled vegetables, and French fries.

The white soup, flavored with herbs and egg, was warm and nourishing.
Since my lunch had been mostly salad, I had hoped to eat a bit more, but the soup filled me up quickly. The fries were quite a large portion, and even Mike had ordered some, so I ended up leaving a few.

We had hoped to meet our Lithuanian friends earlier during the day, but our sightseeing and concert schedule didn’t match theirs. After returning to the hotel from dinner, we finally met them.
Tomorrow, we’ll take the bus together to the seminar venue.

As I followed the path up the stairs, the view opened up to reveal Prague’s beautiful cityscape, filled with rows of unified brick red rooftops.

Since it was the autumn season, the contrast with the colorful trees made the scenery even more striking.

A guard stood at the entrance, and once we stepped inside, a number of buildings spread out before us
“Is that the castle behind us?”
“This whole area is the castle. And that over there is St. Vitus Cathedral.”

I learned that Prague Castle was registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1992 and is considered one of the largest castle complexes in the world.

The staircase inside the South Tower of St. Vitus Cathedral spirals upward like a tornado, and the viewing platform reaches an impressive height of 100 meters.
By the time I finally reached the top— breathing a bit heavily —the view was so vast and breathtaking that it left me speechless. No matter which direction I turned, a completely different panorama unfolded.

“In the Czech Republic, you can tell the era of a building just by looking at it. The area in front is the Old Town, the large buildings in the distance are from the socialist era, and the quirky ones nearby are modern apartments.”

It made me realize how the Czech landscape reflects the many eras the country has lived through.
“So… where exactly is Prague Castle?”
“All of this is the castle.”
He had explained this earlier, but I still couldn’t quite accept it. In my mind, a “castle” meant something like Cinderella’s Castle—one single building.
“Are all Czech castles like this?”
“No, not at all. I’ll take you to another one next time.”

With ten minutes left before the changing of the guards, we returned to the main gate square, where a large crowd had already gathered.
My friend, who is over 180 cm tall, could see everything from the back, but at 160 cm, I made my way toward the front to find a good spot.
Soon, a window opened and the military band began to play. Even after the music stopped, nothing happened for a while. Then, from outside the gate, the guards marched in, and the ceremony continued for about 30 minutes.

“Standing guard at the castle all day must be a tough job.”
“Only elite soldiers are chosen for this, so no one wants to quit.”
Apparently, the salary is quite good as well.

The castle’s park is filled with tall trees, and the golden autumn leaves create a beautiful scene that feels different from Japan’s fall colors.

With the guards’ uniforms and the surrounding scenery, it felt as if I had wandered into a world of princes and princesses from a Disney movie.
Even the tunnel leading outside the grounds was intricately designed, reminding me that this truly is the nation’s most important castle.

When the rain began to fall harder again, we opened our umbrellas and headed back into town. My friend then took me to a Michelin starred Italian restaurant.
I ordered pasta, while my friend chose soup as a starter—but the soup that arrived was so large it hardly looked like an appetizer.
“With just that soup and some bread, I’d be perfectly satisfied.”
In the Czech Republic, it’s common to have soup before a meal, and this “soup culture” would end up saving me many times later on.
My pasta was freshly made, cooked al dente, and simple yet wonderfully delicious.

✈️ Traveloka: Fly to Prague

With our stomachs full, I wondered where we would go next—only to be guided to a café for a relaxing tea time.
My friend’s favorite café was unfortunately full, so we went to another one, but it was just as charming, like something out of a fairy tale.
Even with my already full stomach, I enjoyed a pistachio cheesecake and a warm ginger tea.

Next month would be December. It was still a little early for the Christmas markets, but many shops were already filled with Christmas goods.

Just hearing the word “Christmas” makes me excited, so I’d love to visit again during the market season.
After strolling through the town, my friend drove me back to the hotel, where I rested for a while.

Later that evening, we met again and went to another Italian restaurant. Italian cuisine is apparently very common in the Czech Republic.
Since lunch had been late and filling, I wasn’t very hungry. I planned to order only a salad, but because I was feeling a bit under the weather, I skipped the beer and chose a warm soup instead.
My friend, who had to drive, ordered a non alcoholic beer mixed with fruit juice called “Nealko Radler.” I tried a sip, and it was surprisingly refreshing.
The vegetable packed soup warmed me up, and the salad topped with mozzarella —one of my favorites—and tuna was the perfect combination.

Since I prefer meals with lots of vegetables, like Japanese cuisine, I tend to get tired quickly from the heavier European dishes. It made me understand why many people here choose vegetarian or vegan options.

Tomorrow, my friend will take us to a classical concert.
Thank you so much for the wonderful day and for driving me back to the hotel.

From April to May, the Aiki Jinja Annual Grand Festival, the All Japan Aikido Demonstration, and several international seminars held in Japan brought many aikidoka from both within the country and abroad to the Aikikai Hombu Dojo. It was a lively and inspiring time, and I am truly grateful for the opportunity to train together with so many wonderful practitioners.

Those who visit the Hombu Dojo regularly may already be familiar with the etiquette here, but for first time visitors, some customs may differ from those of your home dojo and feel a little unfamiliar.
The etiquette at Hombu Dojo is not posted on the walls; rather, it has been passed down carefully from member to member over many years. Below are a few points that may be helpful.

【About Personal Appearance】

・Women are asked to wear a white T shirt or tank top under the gi to ensure the chest area is not exposed. Since Aikido is practiced by people of all ages and genders, creating an environment where everyone can focus comfortably is important. We kindly ask men to be mindful of keeping the chest area covered. Choosing to wear a T-shirt underneath is a great option.

・All accessories should be removed. Just as jewelry is prohibited in martial arts competitions, this is an important measure to prevent injuries to yourself and your partner.

・Those with long hair should tie it securely. Instead of a high ponytail, it is safer to tie the hair low or gather it into a bun so it does not get stepped on or hit your partner.

【During Training】

・Training at Hombu Dojo is conducted under the guidance of the instructor, with respect for your partner. Please refrain from unnecessary talking or giving unsolicited explanations of your own methods, and keep your focus on the training.

・When throwing, direct your partner toward the wall side of the dojo. When the dojo is crowded, avoid making large movements to create space; instead, stay aware of your surroundings and train safely.

・When training is divided into two or three groups for throwing practice, those who are not training should observe from outside the tatami. The tatami is for those currently practicing. During observation, please sit in seiza on the wooden floor. If seiza is difficult, some instructors allow sitting cross legged. Observation is also an important part of training, so please watch quietly and learn from the instructor and other practitioners.

・Some instructors allow short breaks for water during class. When drinking, please sit down facing the wall and take your water quietly. Even during breaks, unnecessary talking should be avoided.

・Observation should be done from inside the dojo, not by peeking in from the hallway.

【After Training】

・After class, everyone participates in sweeping and wiping the dojo. Visitors are not considered “guests” in this context, so joining the cleaning is part of proper etiquette. Please be mindful not to get in the way of others while cleaning.

These are the basic points of etiquette. There are also smaller details—such as not pointing the soles of your feet toward the kamidana—but these things naturally become familiar as long as you act with respect toward others and toward the dojo.
If you are unsure about anything, feel free to ask a member; everyone will be happy to help.

For guidance on reception procedures and other manners at Hombu Dojo, the following videos by Konstamikko Korhonen may be helpful:
https://www.facebook.com/watch/?v=8135058026615848
https://www.instagram.com/p/C_ftN45IQ69/

As fellow practitioners of Aikido, I hope we can continue to create an environment where everyone can train comfortably, with kindness and consideration for one another.

https://www.facebook.com/watch/?v=8135058026615848
https://www.instagram.com/p/C_ftN45IQ69/

Today, I’m planning to meet up with my local friends and others in the morning, and they’ve kindly offered to take us sightseeing.
As I was getting ready and munching on a banana, I suddenly felt a slight discomfort in my throat…
Not a great sign.
Maybe I caught something during the training the day before the trip, when I practiced with a friend who had just arrived from overseas. Or perhaps it was from the noisy young people on yesterday’s train.
Either way, it seems quite possible that I picked up a bit of a cold.
I’m always a little vulnerable to overseas bugs, and even though the trip has only just begun, I already have something to worry about.

We’re supposed to meet at 9 a.m. in central Prague.
Google Maps showed several routes, but I chose the tram since it didn’t require any transfers.

Following the navigation, we walked toward the station.
Local people heading in the same direction casually crossed the road where there was no sidewalk, but we chose the safer option and went through a nearby underpass. It smelled a little damp, but no one else was around, and once we climbed back up to the street, we found ourselves at what looked like the tram stop.

This should have been the right place, but I couldn’t find any signs.
Just as I tried to ask the conductor of a stopped tram, the doors closed right in front of me.
When I asked a man nearby, he kindly pointed us to the correct boarding area. We got onto a tram that was waiting there—and to my surprise, it was being driven by the same conductor who had just shut the doors on us.

That kind man even showed us how to buy tickets.
Since I had already checked the fare beforehand, we bought 40 koruna tickets from the machine inside the tram. The price varies depending on how long you ride.

The tram ride took about 40 minutes.
Luckily, I found a seat, and I couldn’t help but get absorbed in watching the scenery drift by—the colorful buildings, the people walking along the streets, the everyday life of the city.
One large building had broken windows and was covered in graffiti, giving it a rather neglected look. Mike, who hates graffiti, was probably grumbling behind me.
Still, most of the buildings were bright and charming, reminding me once again that I was truly abroad.

These days, I rely heavily on technology when I travel.
By checking Google Maps and matching the stop names with our location, we somehow managed to reach the correct station.

It was now 8:55 a.m. Not much time left before our meeting. And as always in the morning, I urgently needed a restroom.
Right after getting off, I spotted a “WC” sign and hurried downstairs. I thought it might be an information center or a public restroom, but it turned out to be paid.
There was no time to fumble with money, so I pointed at Mike behind me and told the lady at the counter, “He will pay,” then dashed straight inside.

While enjoying the relief, I heard the lady and Mike exchanging words—half in Czech, half in English.
It sounded like he was saying, “This is all I have.”
We had paid for the tram by card, and the only cash we had was the bills we withdrew from the ATM yesterday.
The restroom fee was 20 koruna, but the smallest bill we had was 200.She was probably complaining that we didn’t have smaller change.
Sorry, Mike.
As expected, when I came out, Mike explained what happened.
“She said the bill was too big.”
“So what happened?”
“She gave me a bunch of coins.”
When I counted them, there were exactly 180 koruna.
We must have been quite the troublesome customers first thing in the morning.

✈️ Traveloka: Fly to Prague

From there, we walked about five minutes to the café where we were meeting everyone.
It was raining, so we walked with our umbrellas open, and along the way we found the cutest little café—something straight out of a fairy tale.

We arrived at the meeting spot.
Our friends hadn’t arrived yet, so despite the cold, we sat on a bench outside and enjoyed the view until they showed up.

Once inside, I mentioned that my throat was hurting, and they kindly recommended a ginger hot tea.
After that, I found myself ordering it whenever I had the chance.
I wasn’t very hungry, but I tried a bite of “koláč,” a traditional Czech sweet bread that my friends recommended.

Since I’m not big on sweets, the small portion was perfect for me.
Mike ordered a hot chocolate, but as it cooled, it started to solidify—it was literally melted chocolate. Czech hot chocolate is no joke.

After that, we headed to Prague Castle.
The old town, preserved in its historical form, was full of character everywhere we walked. Just strolling through the streets felt like stepping into a storybook world.

I didn’t have any strong impressions of the Czech Republic before coming here, but the more I walked, the more I found myself drawn to its charm.

⇒Trip.com

On May 23, 2026, I took part in the 63rd All Japan Aikido Demonstration held at the Nippon Budokan. This year as well, I participated not only as a performer but also as a volunteer, helping with security staff duties. I’d like to share a glimpse of how the day unfolded.

Although the opening ceremony began at noon, Mike—who was in charge of security outside the venue before and after the event—had to gather at 7:30 a.m.
I was assigned to the women’s changing room and wasn’t required until 8:00, but I decided to head there together with him.

I left home before 7:00 and arrived at Kudanshita Station a little after 7:15, where I saw a few people in suits already walking around.
The morning temperature was 13°C, and even during the day it stayed below 20°C—a rather chilly day. Still, thanks to the warm weather we’d had recently, the greenery around the Budokan moat was lush and vibrant, giving off a sense of early summer.

At the entrance, a large sign was already set up, and people waiting for friends were gathered around.
I ran into several acquaintances there and was surprised to learn that everyone had arrived early despite the official 8:00 meeting time.

The Budokan was still quiet at that hour, but by midday it would be packed with people. Before things got busy, we took a commemorative photo at the main entrance.

Taking group photos here has become a yearly tradition.
Although the official opening time was 11:00, someone had already lined up before 7:30. I was impressed by the dedication of those who come early to secure good seats.

Since the meeting points differed for indoor and outdoor security teams, I parted ways with Mike at the security room and headed to my assigned location.
Under the large Japanese flag, the VIP guest seating and five tatami areas were already fully prepared.

The ceiling of the Budokan is made of layered octagonal structures, each slightly rotated, forming a beautiful geometric pattern like a kaleidoscope. It’s impossible not to look up in awe.

After receiving instructions and confirming positions inside the venue, I headed to the women’s changing room.
While the men’s changing rooms are located in two places inside the arena, the women’s changing room is in a separate building—above the Nakadojo and past the first floor restaurant.
The partitions were arranged differently from previous years, which was a bit confusing at first.
We managed to remove one section, but the room was still about one third smaller than last time. Even so, we arranged it as best as we could so everyone could use it comfortably.

✈️ Search hotels & flights on Traveloka

At 9:45, an announcement came on:
“We will open the venue ahead of schedule.”
When I had walked around earlier, I had already seen a long line forming, so it made sense. Although the official opening time was 11:00, we usually open an hour early due to the crowds.
This year, we opened an additional 15 minutes earlier, and I felt grateful that so many people had come.

After completing the evacuation drill, we took our positions.
During one of the three rotating breaks, I peeked into the arena and saw that the seats were already filled with spectators.

Performers enter the venue from here. Seeing the packed audience must heighten their nerves and excitement even more.

Unfortunately, those of us assigned to the changing room cannot watch the demonstrations in full. There is a monitor inside, but with the constant flow of people, we rarely have time to look at it.
During one break, I managed to step into the venue briefly, but between greeting friends and discussing upcoming plans, there wasn’t much time to relax.

After the first part ended and the second part began, it was soon time for us to change into our uniforms for the Hombu Embu.
When we headed to the Nakadojo, the arena was crowded with participants. We waited in the hallway, received instructions inside the Nakadojo, and then moved toward the venue.
My partner was F chan, who always takes good care of me. Having her by my side was very reassuring.
The Homnu Embu follows a training method format: we observe the Dojo cho performing techniques on the white tatami and then perform the same techniques ourselves.
There were three techniques in total. The usual demonstration time is 1 minute 30 seconds, and this one was just as short.
After each technique, we were supposed to return to our original positions, but the time was tight and sometimes someone else was standing where I needed to be.
It was a bit hectic and made me nervous, but I still enjoyed the demonstration very much.
After finishing, we quickly changed and returned to our security duties.

This year, there were some changes in the lineup, including adjustments to Tada Shihan’s demonstration, which made me feel the passage of time.

The event concluded as scheduled at 5:00 p.m., but people continued coming to the changing rooms afterward, and by the time cleaning was finished, it was past 6:00 p.m.
After that, we attended the appreciation gathering, and by the time I arrived home, it was already after midnight.

Despite the many challenges throughout the day, I was filled with gratitude and satisfaction that we were able to work together and hold the demonstration safely once again this year.
To everyone who participated in the demonstrations, and to all who supported the event—especially those involved in security and operations—thank you very much for your hard work.
I truly appreciate your efforts.
I hope next year’s event will be just as wonderful.

【NAVITIME Travel】

When we arrived at the station in Prague, a wave of people poured out of the train all at once.
The moment I finally stepped outside and breathed in the fresh air, I felt an unexpected sense of relief. We waited on the platform for the crowd to settle before moving on.

All that was left was to head to our hotel—but first, we had an important mission: getting our hands on some Czech koruna.
We had a bit of euro with us, but paying in koruna is much more cost effective in this country. Having cash is essential.

By now, using AI chat tools has become second nature to us, so we immediately asked ChatGPT for advice.
It recommended Komerční banka as a safe, fee free ATM. However, the ATM we found inside the station belonged to a different company.
So we asked for the address of Komerční banka and, with our heavy luggage in tow, went up and down stairs searching for it… only to find nothing.
When we finally asked at the information center, we learned that the ATM we wanted was right across from it—and just a few steps from the ticket gates.

When we checked with ChatGPT again, we realized it had given us the station’s address, not the ATM’s address. At the time, we had no idea that these small mismatches would later lead to several unexpected troubles.

Using the ATM was nerve racking at first, but it turned out to be perfect—no fees, and it even gave us a mix of small bills.
If you need cash in the Czech Republic, Komerční banka is truly reliable.

✈️ Traveloka: Fly to Prague

With cash secured, our next step was buying metro tickets.
The ticket machine only accepted coins, which we didn’t have yet—but thankfully, it also accepted credit cards, so we managed to buy our tickets without trouble.

The only issue was figuring out which platform to use. The one we first headed toward turned out to be the wrong direction.
Once you know which platform you need, Prague’s metro is incredibly convenient—we ended up using it many times during our stay.
There’s a route map inside the train, so taking a photo of it is very helpful.

As is common in many parts of Europe, you’re rarely asked to show your ticket at the gates or inside the train.
It really shows how much trust they place in passengers.

When we got off at Hloubětín Station, we found a lively market right outside, which instantly lifted our spirits.
Following Google Maps for about seven minutes, we arrived at HOTEL DIANA , where we would stay for the next five nights. We accidentally reached the back entrance first, but a kind local pointed us toward the main entrance.

The hotel was clean, spacious, and very comfortable.
However, although our reservation stated “pay on arrival,” the payment had been charged to our credit card a few days earlier without any notice. At that moment, our account held USD, euros, and yen—so the layered currency conversion fees hit us hard.
This led to a small argument with the host and created an awkward atmosphere. Without that issue, it would have been a hotel I’d happily recommend.

⇒ Search Prague hotels on Trip.com

After traveling since morning, we were exhausted. We headed to a small shopping mall we found while walking around to pick up dinner.
There was a supermarket, plus kebab, pizza, and Chinese food shops. Eating out sounded nice, but that night we just wanted to relax in our room.
We bought fruit for the next morning and a “good job today” beer at the supermarket. Mike wanted pizza afterward, but the shop had already closed, so we went to the Chinese restaurant next door instead.

Perhaps because we were in the Czech Republic, the staff spoke almost no English.
We managed to order by pointing at the photos—teamwork at its finest. Back in our room, the seafood fried rice was perfectly fine, but the pork dish Mike had been looking forward to was completely different from the picture.

It was a day full of that familiar mix of excitement and tension that comes with being in a country for the first time.

⇒Trip.com

Despite the long 13 hour flight from Taipei to Vienna, I was lucky enough to have an entire row of four seats to myself. Thanks to that, the fear and stress from the monsoon turbulence were greatly reduced, and the journey turned out to be far more comfortable than I had expected.

Although our arrival was delayed by an hour, I had booked the train to Prague with plenty of time to spare, so there was no need to rush. After completing immigration, I headed toward Vienna Central Station.
I had downloaded the Austrian railway OBB app beforehand, but since it was only a few stops, I thought buying a ticket from the machine would be easier.
However, the ticket machine refused to read my credit card, and even the 20 euro bill I inserted kept coming back out. I asked someone nearby if they could exchange money, but that didn’t work either. When I moved to the next machine, it finally accepted my credit card.

It was now 8:57 a.m. The train I planned to take was scheduled to depart at 9:02, but there were no signs or announcements showing the platform.
When I asked people around me, they all said “they weren’t locals and didn’t know.” I went down to one platform and asked again, but no one had an answer. Before I knew it, 9:02 had already passed.

On another platform, I spotted the woman I had met earlier at the ticket machine. When I asked her, she said, “Ask my husband,” so I approached him—and to my surprise, they were heading to the same destination. Just like that, we naturally formed a little team.
While comparing information from our phones and the station signs, a station cleaner walked toward us. I gathered my courage and asked:
“Which platform does the train to Vienna Central Station leave from?”
“From here,” he replied.
It was exactly the answer I had been hoping for, and I couldn’t help but say, “Thank you!”
He added, “Get off at the next station,” reminding me how important it is to simply ask when in doubt.
Online information showed a 9:33 departure from the same platform, and an AI chat confirmed the same, so we were confident we were in the right place.
Once things had calmed down, we introduced ourselves.
They were a French Canadian couple who had been traveling the world since retiring.
They told me they had visited Japan before and that it was “one of their favorite countries.” Hearing that made me so happy that I gave them some matcha chocolates I had brought from Japan.
This time, they were planning to travel around Europe by train.
“That means the same thing will probably happen again,” Mike joked, and we all laughed together.
We eventually boarded the train and arrived at Vienna Central Station.
Their train was scheduled for a few hours later, while ours would depart in 40 minutes, so we said goodbye on the platform. Having companions during such an uncertain moment was incredibly reassuring.

Inside the station, our train information still wasn’t displayed on the board. Wanting some fresh air away from the crowds, we stepped outside to find a modern cityscape—completely different from the old town scenery one might imagine when thinking of Vienna.

After a while, we checked the board again and learned that our train would be delayed by about 50 minutes.
We found a delicious looking bakery and bought lunch, then discovered that the Czech private railway company RejioJet had an office inside the station. When we went to confirm the schedule, we found a waiting lounge exclusively for RejioJet passengers.
At the entrance, two people were struggling to enter with their mobile tickets. I tried using my printed ticket, and the door opened—so I waved them in with a friendly “Come on!”
The lounge had tables, chairs, and a free coffee machine. All the seats were taken, so we sat on our suitcases while enjoying coffee.
Once a train departed and seats opened up, we moved and relaxed until our train finally left—one hour behind schedule.

The train was full, but thankfully no one was sitting in our reserved seats. The students in front of us were noisy, but we were simply relieved to be on board. After four and a half hours of rocking along the tracks, we would arrive in Prague.

Our tickets were supposed to include water and coffee, but only water was handed out.
Later, we learned that even the free coffee had to be ordered through the app or the seat back screen.
Since we hadn’t downloaded the app, we tried ordering from the screen—but it didn’t work. The entertainment system didn’t function either.
Experiences like this remind me how different things can be from Japan, and how travel teaches you the art of letting go.

To avoid getting overwhelmed by the chaos inside the train, I focused on the scenery outside the window.
It was interesting to see how Austria had many charming houses with triangular roofs, while the landscape changed dramatically once we entered the Czech Republic—wide open plains stretching to the horizon, filled with grasslands and farmland.
However, the towns had a lot of graffiti, which bothered Mike every time he saw it.
Despite the noisy ride, we arrived safely in Prague.
