Yoshihito Shibata Sensei began Karate at the age of seven. Throughout high school, he enjoyed Sumo and Judo. In 1985, he met his teacher Takuya Ogura. Yoshi Sensei lived with him for seven years and studied his style of Ogura-ryu Yawara. Ogura had learned Judo from Uchida Sensei, Kyuzo Mifune style, and Yamada Yaju , Nagaoka Hidekazu style. For five years Yoshi Sensei trained with Seigo Okamoto Soshi in Daitoryu Aiki Jujutsu Roppokai. Okamoto’s teacher was Kodo Horikawa Sensei. Yoshi Sensei began studying Aikido in 1989. He returned to Japan for several years to deepen his Aikido practice and train with several Aikido masters whilst also studying Seitei Iaido and Shindo Muso-ryu Jodo. Yoshi has been practicing a way of life called “KANNAGARA” in Japanese, since 1988. His practice is to unify spirit, mind and body together, to harmonize with the flow of Nature. His daily practices are Aikido, Aiki Jujutsu, Japanese Calligraphy, and Nature Photography. He currently teaches Aikido and Self-Defense at the University of California Santa Cruz.
